Storage and how long a mixed vial lasts

Powder vs solution, temperature, and the 28-day rule for opened multi-dose vials.

Most peptides are more stable as a dry powder than once mixed. Vendors typically recommend keeping powder cold and away from light, and refrigerating mixed vials. Stability differs between compounds, so follow the product's own information where it exists.

For opened multi-dose vials of medicines, CDC guidance in clinics is to date the vial and discard it 28 days after first puncture unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise, because preservatives limit but don't eliminate contamination. That's a reasonable reference point for any vial that's entered repeatedly.

Signs a solution shouldn't be used: cloudiness, particles or discolouration in a solution that started clear.

Key points
  • Powder is generally more stable than solution.
  • Date opened vials; CDC's clinic rule is 28 days unless the maker says otherwise.
  • Discard cloudy or discoloured solutions.

Quick check

Under CDC's clinic guidance, when should an opened multi-dose vial be discarded if the maker gives no date?
