Studying: Obesity, Osteopenia · NCT01724489
About this trial
Obesity is an important risk factor for osteoporosis and fractures. With the growing prevalence of obesity in the U.S., understanding the pathophysiology of bone loss in this population is of importance to public health. Growth hormone (GH) is a critical mediator of bone homeostasis and is markedly reduced in obesity. Our preliminary data suggest an important role for the GH/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) system in the pathogenesis of bone loss in obesity. The development of novel imaging techniques provides an opportunity to investigate the effects of GH on skeletal structure and streng…

About this trial
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of growth hormone (GH) replacement in men and women with a history of acromegaly and who are now growth hormone deficient. We will compare them to persons with a history of acromegaly who have normal GH levels.
Acromegaly results when an area in the brain, called the pituitary, produces too much growth hormone. When an individual is cured of acromegaly, the growth hormone levels may be normal or low (that is GH deficiency). Growth hormone deficiency means the body no longer produces as much growth hormone because the pituitary/hypothalamic r…

Studying: Obesity · NCT00355784
About this trial
With the alarming increase in the prevalence of obesity, identifying factors that predispose individuals to weight-gain is of critical importance. Even when caloric intake and physical activity levels are well controlled, susceptibility for weight-gain is heterogeneous. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) represents the largest portion of daily energy expenditure in normal adults, and as such, variability in BMR among individuals can be a major factor in determining the susceptibility for gaining weight. However, factors responsible for this variability in BMR and resistance to weight-gain remain uncle…

The two octreotide acetate formulations will be evaluated following separate administrations for safety and tolerability including any side effects, the speed at which the drug is absorbed and eliminated in the body, and the ability of the drug to lower the levels of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1).
Studying: Growth Hormone Treatment · NCT03033121
About this trial
Growth hormone (GH) treatment in patients with GH deficiency (GHD) is commonly administered daily, although the pulsatile GH secretion is unlikely to be achieved and this regimen is often not complied. The auxological effect of three injections per week (TIW) regimen is controversial, while the metabolic effects were never evaluated in children. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether two different regimens of weekly injections could lead to similar auxological and metabolic effects in children with GHD.

The main objective is to evaluate the effect of growth hormone (hGH) treatment on the growth velocity in prepubertal children or children in ear…
Studying: Burns, Growth Hormone Treatment · NCT03038594
About this trial
The investigators have previously demonstrated that burn injury causes severe muscle wasting, weight and height retardation, and systemic protein catabolism in pediatric and adult burned patients. The persistent loss of muscle impairs the quality of life of the burned patients, and it also delays autonomy and reintegration into the community. In 2009, the investigators showed that the daily injection of recombinant human growth hormone (GH) for nine months post discharge significantly increased height and weight, as well as lean body mass, in pediatric burned subjects. Our long-term goal is to…
Studying: Healthy · NCT01853566
About this trial
The growth hormone (GH) secretion declines gradually with age, with studies demonstrating a progressive reduction of 14% secretion per decade of life beginning in the second decade. Other studies suggest a disruption in GH secretion in elderly people. These findings suggest a possible association between growth hormone deficiency (GHD) and the ageing process.GH replacement is well known to improve body composition, leading to a decrease in total body fat and an increase in lean body mass. However, GH replacement has only shown an effect on muscle strength in GH-deficient adults subjected to lo…

Studying: Metabolic Diseases, Growth Hormone Treatment · NCT02782221
About this trial
Growth hormone (GH) induces fat metabolism. The mechanisms underlying the fat metabolizing effects of GH remain elusive. However, it is known that insulin suppresses fat metabolism, and GH inhibits the expression of certain insulin-dependent signaling proteins. We therefore hypothesize that the fat metabolizing effects of GH depend on abrogation of insulin-dependent signaling pathways.
In order to investigate the fat metabolizing effects of GH, we'll analyze consecutive adipose tissue biopsies taken after GH exposure and GH blocking, respectively.
Knowledge of the effects of growth hormone a…
