Studying: Extreme Prematurity · NCT01378273
About this trial
Recombinant human erythropoietin (Epo) is a promising novel neuroprotective agent. Epo decreases neuronal programmed cell death resulting from brain injury; it has anti-inflammatory effects, increases neurogenesis, and protects oligodendrocytes from injury.
We hypothesize that neonatal Epo treatment of ELGANs will decrease the combined outcome of death or severe NDI from 40% to 30% (primary outcome), or the combined outcome of death plus moderate or severe NDI from 60% to 40% (secondary outcome) measured at 24-26 months corrected age.
1. To determine whether Epo decreases the combined outcom…

Studying: Infant, Newborn · NCT00334737
About this trial
Infants born prematurely do not increase production of the primary red cell growth factor, erythropoietin (Epo), and often develop an anemia called the "anemia of prematurity." The anemia of prematurity is the most common anemia seen in neonates, and is due to a failure of Epo production. Human recombinant Epo (rHuEpo), given three to five times a week, is successful in treating the anemia of prematurity. A slightly modified, long-acting version of rHuEpo, called darbepoetin alfa (darbepoetin), is now available and has proven effective in increasing hematocrit (red blood cell levels) in adults…

Studying: Dissection of Thoracic Aorta · NCT01369732
About this trial
During thoracic aortic surgery, hypothermic cardiac arrest causes aortic ischemia and reperfusion (IR) periods, respectively. Aortic ischemia results in an ischemic insult to the lower extremities and successive reperfusion results in injury to remote organs, including kidneys. So, there has been considerable interest in the development of therapeutic strategies aimed at attenuating IR injury. One such group of agents that are attracting interest due to their potential protective effects on vascular endothelium is the erythropoietin.
However, the effect of erythropoietin on renal injury induc…

About this trial
Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a condition of reduced blood and oxygen flow to a baby's brain near the time of birth, may cause death or neurologic disability. About this trial
The purpose of this study is to see if a naturally-occurring hormone called erythropoietin changes the action of platelets in the blood. Patients with heart attacks are treated with medicines to reduce the clotting action of platelets. This may create a better environment in the bone marrow for a better response with erythropoietin.

Studying: Acute Myocardial Infarct · NCT01043991
About this trial
Primary endpoint: Is intracoronary injection of a single dose of darbepoetin alpha, during reperfusion in patients hospitalized for ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), able to reduce infarct size ?
In in vivo studies, many experiments evidenced infarct size reduction, due to anti-apoptotic compounds, when given during reperfusion, after cardiac ischemia. In humans, post-conditioning offers such a protection, as the investigators have previously showed (Staat P et al. Post-conditioning the human heart. Circulation. 2005 112(14):2143-8).
Infarct size reduction could lead to a r…

Epo increases red blood cell production and hence the amount of oxygen that can be transported around the body. It is shown that prolonged use of synthetic Epo (rHuEpo) leads to an increase in the period of time a given physical work can be performed, therefore it will continue to be abused by athletes, especially in endurance sports.
The existing method for measuring the abuse of rHuEpo approved by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is based on differences in the sugar groups bound to rHuEpo and Epo produced in the body, respectively.
Proteomics is a method by which one can look at all the…

About this trial
In people diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) anaemia is a common problem and is often treated with EPO (Erythropoietin). One form of EPO used is Darbepoetin (Aranesp®). EPO is safe to use but it has been associated with a rise in blood pressure (BP) in some individuals. The reasons for this are not clear. To try to explain this, this study will look at how EPO affects certain substances in the blood that influence how blood vessels contract and relax. This will be conducted by infusing small amounts of Acetylcholine, BQ123 and Noradrenaline into the arm vessels of volunteers using an …

The primary purpose of the study is to examine the importance of altered erythropoiesis for surface and intracellular erythrocyte proteins, the number of immature reticulocytes, and for the haematological characteristics of the erythrocyt…

Use of recombinant human erythropoietin allows the body to produce more red blood cells, possibly eliminating or decreasing your symptoms and the need for…
