Using Gut Microbial Gbu Gene Testing to Estimate Host TMAO Production Capacity

Active, not recruiting230 peopleNational Taiwan University Hospital2023-07-24 → 2026-04-25🇹🇼 Taiwan

Studying: Gut Dysbiosis for TMAO Production From L-carnitine Consumption · NCT05980884

About this trial

The risk of cardiovascular diseases from red meat consumption varies among individuals due to variations in gut microbiota. L-carnitine in red meat can be converted to TMAO in the body by certain bacteria. Not everyone experiences a significant increase in TMAO levels after consuming carnitine. Gut microbiota differences are observed between high and low TMAO producers. The presence of the gbu gene in gut microbiota is linked to TMAO production. This clinical research aims to determine if the gbu gene can predict TMAO levels after dietary carnitine intake.

It has a variable incidence of 1 in 6700 to 1 in 25000 live births and prevalence of 0.12 to 25 per 10,000 populations in different geographic areas and genetic constitution. A homozygous deletion/mutation involving exon 7 in SMN1 (survival motor neuron 1) is present in around 95% of the cases, resulting in the biochemical deficiency of the SMN protein. A genomic duplication at the same locus produces nearly ide…

The purpose of this study is to learn how treatment with acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) will affect the hearts of patients with Friedreich's Ataxia as well as how it may affect other symptoms of Friedreich's Ataxia such as difficulties with balance, walking, or upper arm function.

Nephroprotective Effects of Carnitine and (PDE5) Inhibitor Agent Against Contrast Media-induced Nephropathy (CMN)

Unknown status80 peopleRandomizedThe Nazareth Hospital2012-05 → 2012-11🇮🇱 Israel

Studying: Contrast Media Induced Nephropathy · NCT01564303

About this trial

CIAKI is a common iatrogenic. Up to date the suggested treatments for CIAKI are partially effective and have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration yet. The lack of effective nephroprotective drug for CIAKI, emphasizes the need not only for additional new drugs but also for new strategies that might also clarify CIAKI pathophysiology. To the best of our knowledge, the potentially beneficial effect of carnitine and PDE5 inhibitors on CIAKI prevention has not been examined, so far.

Mycophenolate Mofetil, Carnitine and PDE5 Inhibitor, Three Potential Treatments for Resistant Proteinuria Slowing Diabetic Nephropathy Deterioration

Unknown status80 peopleRandomizedThe Nazareth Hospital, Israel2012-04 → 2013-06🇮🇱 Israel

Studying: Diabetic Nephropathy, Chronic Kidney Disease · NCT01566006

About this trial

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a growing disease and it is a public health concern, and projections of its future effect are alarming. About one third of those affected will develop diabetic nephropathy at 20 years after diagnosis. Of these patients, 20% will develop clinically end-stage renal disease ESRD, requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT). Patients with type 2 diabetes account for most patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) and RRT. To the best of the investigators knowledge, the effects of MMF on diabetic nephropathy in patients with DM type II were not studied so far. Therefore, …

Carnitine as an Adjunct to Methylphenidate for the Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Studying: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder · NCT01099072

About this trial

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurobehavioural disorder of childhood. The investigators hypothesized that carnitine would be beneficial for treatment of ADHD, and this could be evaluated in a double blind, randomized, parallel group comparison of carnitine+methylphenidate and methylphenidate +placebo. This will be a six-week, parallel group, randomized clinical trial undertaken in an outpatient child and adolescent clinic at Roozbeh Psychiatric Hospital in Tehran, Iran during April 2010-May 2010. 40 male and female subjects, ages 6 to 17 years with a Diag…

Is a Carnitine Based Food Supplement (PorimoreTM) for Infertile Men Superior to Folate and Zinc With Regard to Pregnancy Rates in Intrauterine Insemination Cycles?

Unknown status100 peopleRandomizedShaare Zedek Medical Center2010-02 → 2010-02🇮🇱 Israel

Studying: Male Infertility · NCT01075334

About this trial

Many cases of male infertility are poorly understood and regarded as unexplained. Therefore, a etiological treatment for this condition can not be offered in most cases. A beneficial effect on sperm motility was found in trails using antioxidants such as carnitine, zinc and folic acid. However, most studies lacked a sufficient power to detect a significant effect on pregnancy rates. In this study, infertile men with abnormal sperm quality parameters will be randomized to receive either carnitine-based food supplement (Porimore) or folate and Zinc Tablets.
