Studying: Osteoporosis · NCT00051558
About this trial
Osteoporosis is a condition in which the amount of bone is reduced, the bones are weak, and there is an increased risk for fractures. Glucocorticoids (such as prednisone) are prescribed to treat a large number of conditions such as arthritis and asthma. When taken for several months or longer, glucocorticoids can cause bone loss and lead to a form of osteoporosis called "glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis." This study compared the effects of teriparatide, the study drug, with alendronate, an approved drug for treating glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

Studying: Osteoporosis · NCT01166958
About this trial
Current osteoporosis therapies produce a prompt increase in bone mass, followed by only modest or no further subsequent gains. This limitation, known as the "remodeling transient," reflects the "coupling" of bone resorption with formation such that interventions impacting either of these processes lead to compensatory changes of the other. For example, medications which increase bone formation promptly also stimulate bone resorption. Thus, given the need to dramatically increase bone mass in patients with osteoporosis, it is necessary to "uncouple" formation and resorption. The investigators b…

Studying: Osteoporosis, Osteoporosis, Postmenopausal · NCT07242612
About this trial
This study investigates the use of blood tests known as Bone Turnover Markers (BTMs) to quickly monitor the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatment in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis, which weakens bones and increases fracture risk, is typically monitored using a DEXA scan to measure bone density (BMD), but this method changes slowly. BTMs may show a response to medication within just 3 to 6 months. In this randomized controlled trial, 40 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis will be assigned to receive either antiresorptive drugs (which slow bone loss) or anabolic drugs (which build new b…
Studying: Osteoporosis · NCT01309399
About this trial
Teriparatide is a potent osteoporosis medication that helps prevent fractures, however, the investigators know little about its effect on the hip. The investigators will evaluate hip bone samples from patients treated with teriparatide before undergoing hip replacement. The information will help us understand how teriparatide might help reduce hip fracture risk.
Studying: Humeral Fracture · NCT01105832
About this trial
40 postmenopausal women, with a non-operated proximal humeral fracture, will be randomized to standard treatment (physiotherapy) or standard treatment + Forsteo (rhPTH 1-34) during 4 weeks. Follow-up will be at 7 weeks and 3 months including x-ray and DASH score (The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) measuring physical function, and pain on a visual analoge scale (VAS).
Two doctors, blinded to the treatment, will judge the callus formation and healing on the x-rays and guess the treatment. The DASH score and the pain score will be compared between the treatment groups.
The investig…
Studying: Bone Loss, Periodontitis · NCT00277706
About this trial
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) has potent bone-building actions and has been approved for the treatment of osteoporosis as FORTEO by Eli Lilly \& Co. Numerous studies have verified its effectiveness in increasing bone mass and potential for PTH to positively impact oral bone. The hypothesis of this study is that patients administered FORTEO along with periodontal (gum) surgery will respond more favorably than patients who receive placebo.
There will be 40 subjects enrolled in this study. All subjects will receive surgical treatment. 20 subjects will receive FORTEO and 20 will receive placebo. Subj…
Studying: Osteoporosis · NCT02563353
About this trial
Objective:
This is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) in osteoporosis patients randomized to standard parathyroid hormone (PTH) treatment alone or to standard PTH treatment and Whole-body vibration (WBV). PTH is an effective but expensive anabolic treatment for osteoporosis. WBV stimulates muscles and bones. A combined treatment might have synergistic or additive beneficial effects on bone, reducing fracture risk making treatment more effective and cost-effective. A beneficial effect on muscles and thereby falls risk of WBV may improve fracture risk even further.
If the results of this pilo…
Studying: Non Displaced Atypical Femoral Fractures · NCT01896011
About this trial
Atypical femur (thigh bone) fractures (AFFs) are uncommon low-trauma fractures which often occur without warning, are highly debilitating, and are slow to heal. As physicians learn more about them, AFFs are increasingly being identified prior to a total break. However, there's no evidence on the best way to treat these non-displaced AFFs. One option is teriparatide, an osteoporosis medication that can build new bone. Investigators will conduct a double blind randomized placebo controlled trial to examine whether teriparatide use in AFF patients with an incomplete break will help accelerate fra…
Studying: Spinal Stenosis · NCT02090244
About this trial
Parathyroid (PTH) hormone has been shown to enhance fracture healing in animal studies. There are so far only three published papers concerning humans. Postero-lateral fusions have shown a healing rate of less than 50% after bone. The purpose of this study is to determine if PTH 1-34 (teriparatide) improves the healing rate and the clinical course after spinal stenosis surgery.

Studying: Osteoporosis · NCT00365924
About this trial
This methodology trial will be conducted in patients with osteoporosis and will measure the changes in bone quality parameters, micro- and macroarchitecture, bone biomarkers and bone density following therapy with the approved drug, Forteo.
Studying: Osteoporosis · NCT01293292
About this trial
Previously the approach to treatment of osteoporosis has been to use medications which prevent excessive resorption of bone. More recently medications that build up new bone, i.e. anabolic treatments, have been, and are being, developed. The investigators would like to develop a strategy for evaluating the effectiveness of anabolic therapies by studying a currently available therapy (teriparatide). This strategy could then be used to assess new anabolic treatments as they are developed for use in humans.
The aims of this study are 1) to fully describe the changes in bone turnover in response …
Studying: Autosomal Dominant Hypocalcemia OR Primary Hypoparathyroidism Related to Other Cause But Complicated by Hypercalciuria Under Treatment · NCT02824718
About this trial
Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition in which the parathyroid glands fail to produce sufficient amount of parathyroid hormone or the parathyroid hormone produced lacks biologic activity. The most common cause of hypoparathyroidism is damage to or removal of the parathyroid glands due to neck surgery for another condition. Occurrence of hypercalciuria under treatment is a frequent concern in primary hypoparathyroidism, limiting correction of hypocalcemia.
Hypoparathyroidism can also be caused by an autoimmune process. In rare cases, hypoparathyroidism may occur as a genetic disorder inherite…
Studying: Osteoporosis · NCT01360424
About this trial
The purpose of this study is to analyse efficacy of teriparatide treatment in patients with new forms of inherited low-turnover osteoporosis.
Studying: Osteoporosis · NCT00004993
About this trial
Glucocorticoids are potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agents. However, prolonged use of these potent agents results in severe bone loss and osteoporotic fractures. Parathyroid hormone (1-34), when given as a daily injection has been found to dramatically increase bone mass in osteoporotic animals and postmenopausal women. The purpose of this study is to determine whether 2 years of daily PTH (1-34) injections will increase bone mass and reduce the development of new fractures. In addition, we will follow the study subjects for 2 more years to determine which type of anti-resorptiv…
Studying: Osteoporosis, Post-Menopausal · NCT00018447
About this trial
This study is designed to determine if combining parathyroid (PTH 1-34) with fluoride (MFPSR) therapy in a cyclic treatment regimen will: (1) produce a greater increase in bone density of the spine than would be produced by either treatment alone; (2) prevent the resistance (i.e., decreased bone formation and no further increase in bone density) that is observed within 18-24 months of PTH therapy; (3) eliminate the calcium deficiency and osteomalacia that can occur with fluoride; (4) prevent excessive bone fluoride content; and (5) result in an increase in bone density which is maintained afte…
Studying: Osteoporosis, Postmenopausal · NCT00046137
