Pitocin (oxytocin injection, USP) · medically indicated induction or stimulation of labor; adjunctive therapy in incomplete or inevitable abortion; control of postpartum bleeding

Labor induction/stimulation: intravenous infusion only, of 10 units in 1000 mL (10 mU/mL); initial 0.5-1 mU/min, raised by 1-2 mU/min every 30-60 minutes until the desired contraction pattern; rates above 9-10 mU/min rarely required at term. Postpartum bleeding: 10-40 units added to a running IV infusion (maximum 40 units per 1000 mL), or 10 units intramuscularly after delivery of the placenta. The approved product is an IV/IM obstetric drug given under monitoring; intranasal oxytocin used in research (typically 24-48 IU per session or day) is not FDA-approved. A meta-analysis in schizophrenia reported a possible benefit on negative symptoms only at doses above 40-80 IU that did not hold after removing one outlier study (PMID 33890987).
